HERBS FOR LOVE
Happy Love Day to you All!
An iconic symbol of love, Rose is a plant sure to open and expand the heart canter. Cleopatra even requested that the entire floor of her home be covered in rose petals before Mark Antony arrived. Roses have been given as a symbol of love, romance, and admiration for years and years. Rightfully so, as their medicine, folklore, and history is all about love.
Native Americans used wild rose for a wide range of ailments including combining the petals with bear grease to treat sores of all kinds. Flowers soaked in rainwater bathed sore eyes and the inner bark of Rose root was applied to boils. Gargling rose water can also be done to treat a sore throat, and drinking it has a diuretic effect.
Presently, rose is used by a wide range of herbalists & cosmetic companies for a variety of treatments. The petals are quite astringent, allowing the pores to tighten and keep the skin looking young and fresh. They are also rich in volatile oils, making them useful for adding to medicines like cough syrup. Several commercial eye washes contain rose water, as it makes for a light and refreshing liquid. 🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀
We can’t forget Rosehips, the little berry-like hip that comes on after the petals have fallen. This fruit of the plant is so rich in vitamin C, some herbalists suggest we make it a part of our everyday diet. Drinking rosehips as a tea is an effective medical treatment for colds and any other immune system weakness. 🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀
Rose essential oil is one of the most costly on the market, and rightfully so, as it takes 60,000 harvested roses to produce 1 ounce of essential oil. Try making your own infused oil at home by drying the petals and soaking them in vegetable oil for a few weeks. 🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀
We use Rose petals in our AphroTEAsiac herbal tea blend as well as our ConfetTEA herbal tea.

HERBS FOR THE HEART
Lemon Balm (Melissa)
As a member of the mint family, lemon balm makes for a great ally in the winter months. Its bright, fresh scent alone immediately invigorates and welcomes a sense of life. Greeks and Romans have long recorded history of lemon balm uplifting the spirits, as well as treating heart disorders. It’s wild to think that plants have been used for so many years without fail, and that it hasn’t been until recently that other forms of medication have become our go-to’s. 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
In past centuries, Lemon Balm was used like a mild form of Valium. Nicholas Culpeper (worth getting a book of his if you like plants...he makes it even more fun) wrote: “It causeth the mind and heart to become merry...and driveth away all troublesome cares and thoughts out of the mind.”
One of the best parts about plants is their ability to help with our emotions. Every cell in our bodies respond to plants as soon as they enter our system, causing a reaction not only in the body, but in the mind & the spirit. Lemon Balm provides an excellent example of this action. 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
Easy to grow, just like mint, Lemon Balm prefers average, well-drained soil with full sun and evening shade. Added bonus: the bees love it🐝

HERBS FOR LOVE
Dilating the blood vessels & allowing blood to flow more freely, hawthorn makes for an excellent blood pressure medication. It acts directly on the heart muscle to help a damaged heart work more efficiently. Hawthorne, like many plants, works slowly and gently, making it nearly impossible to overdose(as it is only toxic in large, large doses). If this plant was incorporated in cardiac wings of hospitals, they might be empty of patients! • ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
This plant has a pretty obvious “doctrine of signatures” because the berries themselves look like little hearts that softly speak to us saying, “This is what we’re good for!” (Another good example of the doctrine of signatures is avocados, which will only grow in pairs, looking like sexual organs, as they increase fertility and libido.)
The ancient Greeks and Romans regarded Hawthorn as a symbol of hope and happiness, while many wedding ceremonies would include the flowers & berries in bouquets and corsages. This plant has also historically been called “Mayberry”, and the Mayflower ship was named after its flowering part. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
This tree/shrub grows all over Indiana and can commonly be spotted flowering in May while the berries come on late summer. Berries can be harvested and dried, made into a tea, tincture, conserve, & more. We incorporate Hawthorn Berries into our VITALITY blend, which is designed to promote better circulation throughout the body and keep the heart healthy (physically & emotionally). Available on our website at naptownflo.com.

HERBS FOR LOVE
Despite its wild & energizing appearance, passionflower has long been used as a sedative. Native Americans applied the crushed leaves as a poultice to treat bruises and other injuries, while drinking the tea to soothe the nerves. Passionflower has a reputation for being an aphrodisiac, which is likely where the name came from. Passionflower extract, derived from the flowering tops, has a slightly narcotic effect when taken internally. Just within the past few centuries, it was used as a tranquilizer and even given to children with extra hyperactivity. Some say that smoking passionflower induces a marijuana-like high. And according to pharmacologist Varrot Tyler, Ph.D., this plant continues to be incorporated in several sedative-hypnotic drug mixtures marketed in Europe. 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Presently, many herbalists in the U.S. are speaking of Passionflower as an anti-depressant, anxiety medicine, & mood-booster. Although this flower appears rare and unique, it is native to Florida, Texas, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, & INDIANA!!! It enjoys partially shaded dry areas, thickets, fence lines, and the edge of wooded areas. 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Flo incorporates Passionflower into the “confetTEA” blend on our website (along with rose, chamomile, & lavender.) This loving blend is sure to calm the nerves, bring peace, and invoke a deep state of self-love. Available on our website at naptownflo.com or at @indywfmkt on Saturdays

BEAUTY IN EVERY SEASON
Yesterday my husband and I were talking about how ancient people didn’t have furnaces, stoves, or hot water faucets during the winter...so they were probably much more well-adjusted to the surrounding climate. There are so many ways we are pampered by modern “conveniences” that actually separate us from our true nature to adapt to our surroundings. Does this weaken our ability to adapt? Or detach us from nature? What do you think?

“The future of our minds depends on each individual.
We can no longer look to governments and our social institutions for solutions to life’s problems. We must learn to look to ourselves. And the more of us who do, the greater will be our ability to resolve our individual and societal issues...we are all in this together and we all must act individually.” -M. J. Abadie
And in the words of John Wheeler: “We are inescapably involved in bringing about that which appears to be happening.”
