the "A" word

We’ve all felt it before. Some of us feel it daily, others less often. Anxiety, the leading mental ailment in our society, has had a rampant takeover on the minds of thousands of people. Why? We can point the finger at our culture, our food, our habits…and while many of these (along with our lifestyle habits) are contributing factors, it often comes down to guiding our thoughts to cross over to a more loving perspective.

Of course there are times when it isn’t so easy: when we just aren’t feeling balanced or have health issues that make a simple mindset change seem like an inhumanly impossible feat. In these chronic cases, there are a plethora of prescription drugs on the market that can be useful to those who need extra support. It’s pretty miraculous that modern medicine has created something like this for the many who struggle. However, the more I talk to people, the more it seems that the vast majority don’t want to rely on taking a chemical pill (with poor side effects) everyday just to feel like themselves.

*Reach out via email or instagram to learn about medicinal herbs that support a healthy nervous system! Our Anti-anxieTEA is a great place to start*

After struggling with anxiety for over six years, my lifelong friend and cousin, Sara, is officially Xanax free and managing her anxiety completely naturally. Sara and I grew up together, 3 months apart, 3 houses away in the same neighborhood, and in the same grade at the same school from kindergarten through college. And we’re from the same family<3. Anxiety is something that runs through the veins of our mothers’ side, something that isn’t often talked about, but mutually felt by our relatives. Have you ever heard the phrase: “It runs in the family….and this is where it runs the f*ck out.” ? This makes me want to clap and wave my hands in the air for Sara. Maybe soon I’ll be doing the same for you.

While this recent surge of anxiety has been swirling around, so has the term “epigenetics”. For years, we’ve placed our pre-disposed genetic flaws first in the blame-line of why we have disease (or imbalances). And yet, we each hold an individual power to create a change and to regain that equilibrium, setting the imbalance straight not only for ourselves but for our future generations. This healing of the self sends light back through our ancestral lineage while opening doors for those who come after us. Sara’s pathway to self-healing has been curvy, up and down, and non-linear, yet she’s made it and is making it every day. I asked her a few questions about her journey in hopes that some of you may be able to relate, find inspiration, or feel empowered by her answers. As always, feel free to reach out for further advice or guidance. Cheers to living a “freeing” life.

Love, FLO

(please pardon our familial language at times towards one another;)

Alana: What has been the most challenging part about reaching the Xanax-free climax?

Sara: I would say the hardest part has been conditioning myself not to fear since fear is the basis of all anxiety and really fuels the fire. It’s been a long process but by slowly picking away at fear I’ve gradually become less afraid of anxiety itself and have become more able to enjoy life instead of worrying how I’m going to feel when I wake up each day.

Alana: What has been the most helpful resource to you?

Sara: Other people in general have been the best resource. Both the people who don’t understand what but care and want to listen. And the people who know exactly what I’ve gone through and can relate. I’ve found that just talking about it and being open about it has been the most helpful thing of all. And I hate when other people feel like they can’t do that. Screw the stigma - there are a lot more people in the same boat than most people realize.

Also I really do recommend that book you gave me. I don’t think you need to read it cover to cover but there were certain parts that related to me more so. Those taught me a lot and gave me some really helpful tips

“Hope and Help for Your Neves” by Dr. Claire Weekes

Alana: What gave you the most comfort when it felt difficult?

Sara: Andy (my husband) and my mom comforted me the most. When I felt like I couldn’t live a normal daily life because of my anxiety and panic attacks, they would come sit with me at work until I calmed down.

Alana: What’s your best advice to others who are working towards going prescription free?

Sara: I would actually probably say don’t be afraid to take prescription medicine in the thick of things. It doesn’t make you a weaker person. When things are really tough they can help in a bind. But I also think it’s important to commit to taking other steps - usually more difficult ones - to heal yourself long-term. Once you put healthy lifestyle choices into practice, it’s a lot easier to get off mainstream meds and I think feel better in general.

Alana: What does it feel like to no longer rely on a daily dose, and to now trust & rely on your inner amazing self?

Sara: Freeing.

the greatest merger of all

The most ideal situation (and pretty possible situation) would be the merging of modern Western medicine with ancient energy medicine. There is room for both. There is need for both.

If you’ve been run over by a tractor, meditation and hawthorn berries aren’t going to save you. The reverse is true: when our bodies are shutting down because of stress, a surgeon isn’t able to cut us open and remove the stress, or give us a magic pill to melt it all away. These modalities are equally important and valuable, and could work wonders if we only chose to implement them both where they’re needed.

For a long time, I was angry at modern Western medicine, because I was relying on it to solve issues that simply needed lifestyle changes and energy healing instead. When we view ourselves as a whole beautiful mass of vibrational cells, we’re reminded that our bodies aren’t machines we can just press a button on and fix. We’re much more complex, unique, and profound than that.

Love is truly the ultimate healer...when we infuse that into our lives, every cell in our body responds and vibrates on a healthier level. Thank you @healdocumentary @kelly.c.humes @megbarrick @oldforestfarm and everyone else out there for talking about this topic and bringing it to light

Fló

I am often asked, "What got you into all of this?", and I often respond "I have a strong passion for it." This is true, but the full story goes a little deeper.

I will never forget leaving the St. Vincent's Women's Health center during a summer home from college. I had scheduled an OBGYN appointment at the beginning of summer break and was looking forward to having time with my family and my hometown friends. As I entered what I thought would be a quick-in-and-out appointment, I texted my friends telling them I'd meet them at the pool after my appointment. Everything after that feels like a huge blur. I remember sitting on the table hearing the words "abnormal cells", "cancer", "HPV", "why didn't you get the vaccine?!" and "surgery". I didn't understand what any of it meant. I had so many questions and felt as though I was left in the room to get dressed and be on my way. My doctor had briefly described to me that they found abnormal cells in my cervix, and had identified them as the increasingly common Human Papillomavirus. So, I might have CANCER? Why are there no symptoms? How "abnormal" is "abnormal"? What's HPV?! I felt confused, scared, and like I might die of cancer but wasn't sure why.

I cried for the next week straight, wondering if I was contagious, if I had cancer, and shamed for not getting this "highly recommended" vaccine. My mom was my greatest support especially that week. She left work that day and met me in the nearest parking lot so I could crawl into her car and cry. She told me that we decided a few years back not to get the Vaccine because it was so new: it only protected against a few strands of HPV, and there had been multiple stories of women suffering greatly from faulty effects of the vaccine.

When I returned a few weeks later for a follow-up appointment, my doctor quickly went over my options. I could wait a year and let it clear on its own, or I could have the walls of my cervix scraped away with a laser and potentially never be able to have children. She highly recommended the surgical procedure. This seemed like absolute nonsense to me...pay thousands of dollars for an invasive surgery to get rid of abnormal cells, orrrrrr let it go away on its own. What?!

IMG_0097 (2).jpg

This was when I truly awoke. Normally, I would have blindly followed any doctor's recommendation...because they went to school for this stuff, right? I would have put my full trust in her and accepted my "diagnosis". However, something felt wrong about all of it. I went home and spent hours researching online (mostly to find the same articles copied and pasted into various WebMD-like sites)... until I found the book "HPV & Cervical Dysplasia" by Jane Semple, MA, ND. It was a small booklet, and only available on one website for $120. (This was before Amazon...now it's $12, shipped tomorrow). My longtime friend, Alicia, was in medical school at the time, so I asked if her university library carried the book...they did not, so she went above and beyond to have it transferred from another medical school for her to rent, and for me to borrow.

As soon as the book arrived, I sat on my bed and read it word for word, from front to back, jaw dropping, crying, and asking WHY over and over in my head. WHY didn't my doctor tell me that by changing my diet and vitamin intake, HPV could be treated within 6 months? WHY didn't I know that the strand of HPV I contracted was not one of the cancer-causing strands? WHY did my doctor not ask me about my diet or health habits? WHY didn't I know that a plethora of plants were available to heal women's reproductive organs? I became really upset...upset at my doctor for not telling me all of this. Upset that this information was so hard to access. Upset that this wasn't mainstream information. And upset that I was a week away from spending thousands of dollars on an invasive surgery when all I had to do was change my diet and vitamin intake.

I started to become obsessed with this new way of being healthy. I wanted to know which plants would prevent my dad from becoming a diabetic. I wanted to know what essential oil I could give my friend to help her migraines. The more I read, the more I realized that there truly was a plant for EVERYTHING. Later that year, I went to California to learn more. I wanted to help people discover this amazing, empowering, and fun way of healing themselves. I took a course in Ayurveda, a very ancient healing practice, also known as "the science of life". During that course, I was lucky enough to listen to Dr. Andrew Weil give a lecture on healthcare. He pointed out that the nutrition course at most medical schools is a one-time blowoff class. He talked about how food is medicine, how our diet so directly affects our health. He talked about stress relief, yoga, meditation, breathing, sleeping...how all of it is connected. How the human body requires so much more than a pill or surgery to feel vibrant and healthy. This made sense. This felt true, honest, and real.

I came home from that trip feeling like I had just discovered the meaning of life...like I was holding the most precious gold in my hands and in my heart. I could not keep it to myself. I started making all kinds of remedies and sharing them with people. I was constantly reading, testing things out on myself, ordering more books, keeping notes, spending more time outside to meet new plants...I wanted to make this information more available to everyone. And as if out of nowhere, FLO was born.

FLO continues to evolve everyday, and most of the time I look at it all and think "Who made all of this?!" There is most definitely a greater force working through me, the gentle spirit of plants showing me the way. Sometimes when pairing plants I ask them if they could be friends with each other...most of the time they say yes:) Logic seems to fall by the wayside as I listen intuitively to what needs to be created next; what plant wisdom and healing our world needs next.

I find myself more and more curiously fascinated every single day by how nature works. How there truly is a plant for everything. How nature provides anything a human could ever need. How it speaks to us. And how stunningly, synchronistically, & magically it all works together. This planet is really special. It's time to remember how to treat ourselves, and each other, with the same reverence Earth provides for us. It's time to treat the Earth with that same reverence back. It's time to revel in her beauty...to make the most of the time we have to enjoy the Mother of Nature.

QUITTING COFFEE

coffee.jpg

Coffee beans have been a part of human culture for ages. Back in the hunter-gatherer times, hunters would grab two or three coffee beans & give them a chew before their next venture out into the wild. Even during battle times, coffee beans provided humans with a quick jolt of energy & stamina before such a taxing feat.

Today, we consume quite a few more than three beans, just so we can walk to our cars for work in the morning. What. Happened. With the rise of consumerism, productivity, and capitalism, we've had lots of expectation put on us. We've got a lot more responsibility than bringing home food to put on the table. Sure, it might be easier to stop by the grocery and grab a rotisserie chicken than it might've been to cut a chicken's head off in the backyard, but have we sacrificed simplicity for the sake of productivity?

In our current world, it makes sense why we think we need that cup of coffee before taking on the day...with 7 text messages to respond to, 8 bills to pay, 79 emails in our inboxes, a stop to get gas, trying to maintain healthy relationships with not only our families (tribes) but also with everyone else we see in a day...oh yeah and don't forget to eat and sleep, because those things somehow fall by the wayside. Inherently, in our smart little cell's memory banks, we remember what simplicity feels like. When truly all we needed to survive in a day was to eat, sleep, and love. So before you carry on with your hectic life and try to quit coffee at the same time, try quitting something else that drains you of your energy. Let's keep it simple.

Now, we can bring in the plant allies that are here to sustain and build energy in our bodies for the long term....plants like ginkgo, ginseng, & nettles are here to take over. Rather than feeling that caffeinated spike...we can feel sustained energy, longevity, and higher adrenal support to get us, not just through the day, but through life. When we're operating from a consistent level of energy (which can also be improved by diet & exercise) our bodies function from a healthier level from within, rather than having to outsource by downing espresso shots.

"Caffeine-based stimulants may give us a temporary boost, but in the long run they increase fatigue by overstimulating the body and exhausting the adrenal glands. Chronic health problems, including symptoms that resemble chronic fatigue syndrome, have been observed in people who use caffeine long-term." -The Herbal Drugstore by Linda B. White, M.D. , Steven Foster, & Herbs for Health

How to make your own fragrance

FRAGRANCE: a commonly listed "ingredient" under many household products, shampoos, and perfumes. The word "fragrance", according to the FDA, can be listed as an ingredient for over 500 chemicals...allowing manufacturers to keep their recipes secret. Many of these "fragrance" chemicals are hidden neurotoxins and carcinogens. (Neurotoxins are the kind of chemicals that directly affect the brain and can lead to conditions like Alzheimer's & Parkinsons.) Have you ever been around someone wearing a perfume that immediately makes you gag, feel itchy, or irritated? Smells can be an instant mood changer for us, so what we wear & use could be contributing to that sinus irritation, mental fog, headache, or asthma we may sometimes experience.

IMG_0089 (3).jpg

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN FRAGRANCE

you will need:
DISTILLED WATER
PURE GRAIN ALCOHOL (VODKA IS BEST, HIGH PROOF IS BETTER)
3 OF YOUR FAVORITE ESSENTIAL OILS
10mL GLASS ROLL-ON BOTTLE

1. Choose a base, middle, and top note. The base is the long-lasting part of the scent, typically heavier & earthier. The middle note stays with you and helps carry the top note to it's delicate lightness. Don't get too caught up in this...if you want to smell like a flower, using all 3 top notes will still work divinely.
*A general rule for choosing essential oils best for base/middle/top is knowing what part of the plant was used to make that particular oil. For example, lavender flower buds are used to make lavender essential oil, making it a great, light top note. Vetiver, however, is made from strong roots, giving it a heavier, earthy base quality.

2. Fill a 10mL glass roll-on bottle with 7mL pure grain alcohol, followed by 1.2 mL distilled h2o.

3. Fill to the top (2.5mL) with essential oils. For example, 1mL base oil, 1mL middle note, .5mL top note. Any ratio will do. Again, don't get too caught up in this part. Trust your nose, your intuition, & your heart.

4. Placing your thumb over the opening of the bottle, gently swirl & mix together until you have a consistent solution. Label with date, and store in a dark, cool place (out of sunlight as this can strip the scent) for 4-6 weeks. I check on mine every few days and give it a little swirl to make sure the solution remains consistent.

5. During that 4-6 week time, notice how the moon has changed and maybe come back around to where it was when you made your blend. Tracking this time period by the moon phases is much more fun than setting a notification on your calendar.

6. Wear your fragrance proudly, as you've designed and created something truly unique and authentic to you!

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN PURCHASING ESSENTIAL OILS

IMG_0094 (1).jpg

IN CHOOSING HIGH QUALITY ESSENTIAL OILS, THERE ARE PLENTY OF COMPANIES TO TRUST, AND OTHERS MAYBE NOT SO MUCH. AS WITH ANYTHING, TRUSTING YOUR INTUITION AND GUT FEELING IS THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO. IF A COMPANY ISN'T BEING TRANSPARENT ABOUT THEIR PRACTICES, OR PERHAPS ISN'T SOURCING SUSTAINABLY, IT MAY BE TIME TO FIND A NEW BRAND.

RED FLAGS
-WORDS LIKE "FRAGRANCE & PERFUME" TYPICALLY MEAN THERE ARE CHEMICALS INVOLVED AND THE SOURCE IS NOT ENTIRELY PLANT-BASED
-WORDS LIKE "NATURAL & PURE" GENERALLY MEAN NOTHING. JUST AS WITH FOOD PACKAGING,  BUYING "ORGANIC" VS "NATURAL" WILL ENSURE BETTER QUALITY AS WELL AS SAFETY FOR YOUR BODY
-"THERAPEUTIC GRADE" IS NOT A TERM REGULATED BY ANY ORGANIZATION. COMPANIES USE THIS TERM TO MEAN WHATEVER THEY WANT IT TO MEAN. (AND CHARGE MORE FOR IT)
-IF PRICING SEEMS TOO LOW OR TOO HIGH, CALL THE COMPANY AND ASK WHY... IT IS NORMAL FOR A BOTTLE OF ROSE OTTO OIL TO COST MUCH MORE THAN A BOTTLE OF ROSEWOOD, AS THOUSANDS MORE ROSES ARE HARVESTED FOR THE ROSE OTTO THAN ROSEWOOD. IF A PRICE SEEMS TOO LOW, CHECK TO SEE IF IT COMES DILUTED IN A CARRIER OIL.
-MULTI-LEVEL MARKETS CAN SUCK YOU IN QUICKLY...MAKE SURE YOU TRUST THEIR METHODS BEFORE BUYING INTO OVERLY PRICED OILS

GOOD SIGNS
-ORGANIC/ UNSPRAYED/ WILDCRAFTED
-SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES (WHERE ARE THEY SOURCING THE CROPS/PLANTS FOR THEIR OILS AND HOW?)
-THE COMPANY IS TRANSPARENT AND HONEST ABOUT THEIR PRODUCTS AND HOW THEY ARE TAKEN CARE OF
-DETAILS ARE THOROUGHLY PROVIDED ON WEBSITE
-MEMBERS OF THE NAHA (NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR HOLISTIC AROMATHERAPY)
-PHONE NUMBER IS PROVIDED TO CALL WITH QUESTIONS
-THE COMPANY IS WILLING TO PROVIDE SAMPLES
-FULL BOTANICAL PLANT NAME IS LISTED ON THE PACKAGING (FOR EXAMPLE: THERE ARE 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF BASIL, EACH ONE SMELLING ENTIRELY DIFFERENTLY. IF THE BOTTLE JUST SAYS "BASIL" CHANCES ARE THEY AREN'T SURE WHICH VARIETY OF BASIL IT IS EITHER)
-DARK GLASS BOTTLES (NO PLASTIC OR CLEAR GLASS)
-PRICING IS FAIR
-DETAILED INFORMATION IS PROVIDED ON USEAGE

QUESTIONS TO ASK ESSENTIAL OIL COMPANIES

-WHERE DO THE PLANTS COME FROM?
-HOW/WHERE ARE THE PLANTS GROWN?
-HOW ARE THE CROPS/LAND TREATED?
-HOW ARE EMPLOYEES/FARMERS TREATED?
-DO THEY USE ORGANIC METHODS?
-WHAT SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES DO YOU HAVE IN PLACE?

wtf is a tincture?

tincture: "TINK-SHURE"
remedy made by extracting the medicinal parts of a plant by using alcohol or glycerine
(herbal extracts)

tinctures have been around since the good ol days, and i like to define them as the natural alternative to pill popping. rather than putting a capsule of chemicals in your mouth, why not take a magical drop of plant power?

the first time i had a customer ask me about a tincture, i described it in this way to her, and she replied "oh...so it's kind of like how we work as humans. we go around and put little drops of our own magic in the people we meet and the places we go and make the world better" YES. just like that.

with so many chemically altered substances that are being over-prescribed in our modern medical system, we must remember how it was done before it got so far from the simple truth. in fact, many of the drugs in our modern medical system hold a plant-based *active* ingredient...so what are the other chemicals in there for other than the nasty side effects? by treating yourself with strictly plant medicine, there are no side effects, no risk of future disease formulating in the body, and no risk of addiction. the authenticity of plants is simple, real, and effective. (not to mention the extra positive side effects that come with more plants in the body!)

if you are currently taking any type of prescription, i urge you to research plant alternatives and lifestyle changes you can make (ie: eating patterns, meditation, exercise, emotional healing) to "treat yoself" in your own way. we know the depths of ourselves better than any doctor ever will; therefore you hold the most power in healing yourself.

*there are cases in which a prescription drug is necessary to maintain health. trust your instincts and listen to your body wholeheartedly before making any major changes

WITH LOVE,

FLO

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN TINCTURE

find a plant that serves a healing purpose that speaks to you. a great plant to start with is "echinacea" (purple cone flower... a great immune system booster to have around during cold and flu season)

1. fill a mason jar 3/4 full with dried plant/herb

2. pour your choice of alcohol or vegetable glycerin into the mason jar until the plant is entirely submerged
(be sure to use high proof alcohol, organic if possible. if using vegetable glycerin, find a food-grade brand.
i use mountain rose herbs)

3. allow the plant to remain submerged in the closed and sealed mason jar for 6-8 weeks

4. strain the liquid through a cheesecloth to remove plant parts and bottle the liquid into a dropper-cap glass bottle.

5. label your tincture, store in a cool, dry place, and use as needed!

HAVE YOU ACTUALLY BREATHED TODAY?

with our on-the-go lifestyles, it's pretty easy to forget to notice how we're breathing, or if we even are at all. one of the most common things I see in people: the shallow, chest breathing. we're all guilty of such shallowness. the breath gets all caught up in our chest and we barely let oxygen reach the bottom of our lungs. this stresses us even further. it creates tension in the body, and keeps those racing thoughts cluttered in our heads. when we can truly drop into the breath, bring it in from the base of the belly, and fill allllll the way up...that's when we're actually breathing. try it & notice how you feel...

fló's personal favorite breathing technique for stress relief:

  • the relaxing breath

sit up tall with each backbone stacked on top of the next, from the tailbone all the way into the back of the neck.
-to begin take a deep sigh out through the mouth.
-on an inhale, close the mouth and breathe in through your nose to the count of 4.
-pause at the top of your breath for 7 counts (notice if your body is automatically tensing-up here...try to stay at ease in the body).
-exhale as loudly as you wish for a full count of 8. repeat up to 3 times.

this method brings the body out of stress/fight or flight mode and brings us back to the parasympathetic/at ease mode. we operate more clearly from this place and use our energy more efficiently.
